The 2nd XI hosted Glazebury 2nd XI on Saturday 5th July at Gorse Croft. Unfortunately, an eight-match unbeaten run came to an end as the visitors won by four wickets.
Glazebury's captain Ian Black won the toss and elected to field first. Audlem quickly lost their opener John Wainwright with the score on 9. Zar Ahmed and skipper Danny Thorburn took the score to 34 before Ahmed became Black's second victim. One run later Thorburn was dismissed for 17.
Paddy Leese was joined by Paul Thorburn and between them they staged a recovery. The senior Thorburn batted superbly and curbed his aggressive instincts whilst compiling an excellent 38 as their partnership yielded 74 runs. Steve Farnell joined Leese and they took the score to 134 when Leese was bowled having scored 34. Farnell was joined at the crease by son Reggie. The partnership added another 15 runs until dad was bowled for 25.
At 149 for 6 things were looking good for Audlem. However, a major collapse saw the remaining four wickets fall for four runs as the home side were dismissed for 153. The best bowling figures for the away team were from Gerard Southworth who took 4 for 16 and Ian Black who took 2 for 3.
The home team's fears were confirmed when Glazebury began the chase in storming fashion. The score had reached 46 in only the sixth over before the first wicket fell – Black was dismissed by Abbie Adams for 14. Then Dave Mason and Southworth added 64 for the second wicket before Southworth was dismissed for 20 by Roy Wild. Wild then took a spate of quick wickets to help secure some additional points for Audlem. He ended up with a creditable 4 for 23 despite having to go home for a while during the tea interval for personal reasons.
However, the match winner for Glazebury was the opener Mason. He was dismissed by Reggie Farnell for a magnificent 71 – but by then, the game was over. It was a superb, chanceless innings from the Glazebury man and gave his team a well-deserved win by 4 wickets as they reached 157 for 6.
Audlem gained 11 points to slip back to second in Division 4 and Glazebury gained 20 points for the win.
Yesterday the 2nd XI travelled to Warrington to play Rylands 2nd XI. A report on the match will appear later in the week.
