The children of Audlem St James' CE Primary School have gone back in time for the day and seen just what life was like for children of Victorian times on a visit to Blists Hill at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum.

As well as learning how to write on a slate and add up pounds, shillings and pence, the pupils of Year 4 learnt a valuable lesson on how children were expected to behave and speak to adults in those days. One child commented that, "we had to sit up with our hands behind our back all the time which was very uncomfortable."

One of the most valuable things they discovered was that Victorian children were not expected to aspire to anything but to be satisfied with their lot. "At the start it was fun." said one girl, "But it's unfair that I couldn't get a good job just because I'm a girl."

In the afternoon the pupils returned to their 21st Century clothes and went around the Victorian streets finding out about shops, chemists and life in general.

Eventually they had to leave the late 1800's and return home, informed, excited but most of all happy that when they got home their dinner would be ready and TV was there for them to watch.

Audlem Online adds: There is a feature on Audlem School in this week's Nantwich Chronicle "School Report" section – 2 pages covering the work that the pupils are undertaking at the moment. On sale now at Williams' newsagents.
