Saints through in tricky cup match

After the weather forced a couple of games to be postponed, ASC Saints U11s football team returned to action with a cup match against Betley on Sunday.

The game had all the ingredients for a cup banana skin for Saints. Playing away from home against lower league opposition and on a muddy pitch with a slope not dissimilar to one made famous by cup giant killers Yeovil, the potential for upset was there!

However, Saints played very well indeed, right from the off. Great football was matched with hard work and the goal that put Saints in front was simplicity itself.

A strong challenge in midfield won the ball. A simple pass down the line to the wide player was controlled, the ball pushed past a defender and crossed low into the box. It was met by the Saints striker who got in front of his marker and flicked the ball home. Simple, but very effective.

Saints took the 1-0 lead into the second half where they would be playing "up the hill!" In actual fact, this helped Saints a great deal as the ball held up a bit more. This meant that the slick passing moves ended in chances rather than the ball running out of play. Saints added two more goals and ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.

The win secured a place in the cup quarter final against Cougars – the only team to have beaten Saints so far this season!

Next Sunday, Saints return to league action with a game Vs Red Dot FC (away at Green St, Sandbach, kick off 10am).
