The 2nd XI travelled to Warrington to play Rylands last Saturday on a warm, sunny, mid-summers day and came away with a 77-run victory to remain in second place in Division 4. The star of the day was Ronnie Farnell with a good all-round performance.
The captain for the day, Paddy Leese, won the toss and decided to bat first. Andy Capper and Zar Ahmed opened for Audlem and provided a solid platform of 40 runs before Ahmed was trapped lbw for 12. Leese then joined Capper and added 16 before being caught behind off a lifting delivery from the star bowler for the home team, James Threadgold.
Capper was bowled for an enterprising 43 and it was then left to Paul Thorburn and Ronnie Farnell to ensure that Audlem reached an excellent 185 for 8. The senior Thorburn continued his impressive form with the bat to make a quick-fire 24 and Ronnie Farnell made a superb unbeaten 33. There were useful contributions from James Hindle (11) and Jack Beard (10).
Rylands were never in the hunt in their chase of 186. This was down to a magnificent, fiery spell of bowling from Ronnie Farnell. He removed two Rylands' batsmen in his first two overs to catches behind the stumps and ensured that the away team had the ideal start.
In his second spell, Farnell completed the job in the drizzle that replaced the sunshine to end with 5 for 39. He bowled with pace and venom and was simply too hot to handle for the home team. There was useful support from Lyndon Woodcock with 2 for 13 and Reggie Farnell, 2 for 21 as Rylands were all out for 108
It was an excellent all round performance by Audlem with the main plaudits going to the all-round performance of Ronnie Farnell.
The 2nd XI gained 25 points and Rylands 6. This afternoon Rostherne 1st Xi are the visitors to the Gorse Croft for a 1.30 pm start.
