Don't let the statistics stack up this winter and get your chimney swept!

Unbeknown to you, bird nests, soot and debris are all things which could be lurking in your chimney. Don't suffer a fire and stay safe by getting your chimney swept!

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding local householders and businesses to get their chimney swept as part of Chimney Fire Safety Week (September 7th – 1 2nd)
.
Real fires create a warm and homely atmosphere but bring with them extra risks. By following a few simple steps a chimney fire could easily be avoided.

· Always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers
· Make sure embers are properly put out before you go to bed
· Keep chimneys and flues clean and well maintained

Nick Evans, Head of Prevention at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service explains: "Without proper maintenance a chimney can become dangerous and cause a house fire, so it's important that we get the message across of how important it is for people to get their chimney swept before using them, during this week long campaign.

"There has been a 32% reduction in the number of chimney fires we attend over the past five years which is great news but we want to bring this figure down even more.

"It's important that people get their chimneys swept now and not leave it until the last minute or simply forget to get the job done."

Regular maintenance of your chimney will depend on the fuel you burn:

  • Smokeless coals: At least once a year
  • Wood Up to four times a year
  • Bituminous coal Twice a year
  • Oil Once a year
  • Gas: Once a year

Nick added: "If the worst should happen, a smoke alarm can give you the extra time you need to escape in a house fire – make sure you test yours regularly."
