Polecat in shed

There's a particularly interesting Chatbox post this afternoon.

It says: "We believe that we have a polecat in our garden shed – it seems to have arrived in the last few days. I've now seen it a couple of times in the evening, and looked it up on the internet so I'm pretty sure it's a polecat. 

"We had noticed that the birds in our garden had been somewhat absent recently so maybe this is the reason as they are carnivorous?

"We don't want to get rid of it but would maybe like some advice as to how to 'manage' it being there without causing any damage etc.."

Is there any advice we can pass on? We have had a good number of polecat reports from the local area in recent years.
