Pharaoh to Freedom ends run

Congratulations to the Methodist Production team that completed their five night run last night of Pharaoh to Freedom.

After months of rehearsals and an exhausting week with performances from Tuesday evening to last night, all will now be able to look back on a job well done.

Just in case you missed it, this is what our AudlemOnline reviewer had to say after the first night:

It took the combined efforts of Moses (Patrick Birnbacher), Aaron (James Turner), assorted plagues and the full force of the production chorus to convince Pharaoh (Thomas Flattery) to "Let my people go".

The story opens with the Rosen family sharing the traditional Passover meal and discussing its origins, going back in time to the plight of the Israelites in slavery in Egypt.

Moses, inspired by a realistic burning bush, enthusiastic plagues of flies, frogs and boils makes Pharaoh's life a misery. Even then he doesn't give in until the first-born are slain across Egypt, with the Angel of Death only avoiding (or Passing Over) houses with a smear of lamb's blood. So Pharaoh eventually agrees to let the Israelites out of Egypt and Moses leads them on the long trek to the Promised Land.

Fast forward a few hundred years and the link is made to the Christian celebration of Christ the Passover Lamb. And finally back to the present day to finish the Passover meal.

The narrators (Megan Birnbacher and Gracie Reece-Gresty) held the story together and the choir, conducted by Naomi Newman (who with husband Toby recorded the musical backing) were as good as ever – including some who could recall singing in the same production 25 years ago.

From Pharaoh to Freedom, by Victoria Richmond with music by Roger Jones will be performed in the Methodist Church on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings this week, and tickets are still available for most performances – ring Julia Parton on 811761.
