No shredded paper in grey bin

Having just received Cheshire East's "Leave it Loose!" leaflet, we were puzzled that there was no mention of what to do with shredded paper, which up until now had been taken in the grey bin provided they were placed in a plastic bag.

An enquiry to the information call line reveals that the recycling machinery is not able to cope with shredded paper, it gets clogged up!

So AudlemOnline readers would be well advised to put their shredded paper in the black bin and not risk having an orange "cannot collect" sticker on their grey bin. So much for encouraging green technology!

AudlemOnline editor adds: Yes, there are some items that really do clog up the equipment. A couple of years ago, I was invited to see the recycling centre at Shotton on Deeside. It really is impressive and virtually all that goes there is separated and recycled.

The most impressive feature is the huge paper mill at the end of the process which produces newsprint from recycled paper, cutting down on imports from Scandinavia and Canada, although the paper mill company is Finnish.

The original article published on AudlemOnline after that visit in May 2012, is republished today as it may still be of interest.

I recall, anything with string , such as netting, or video tapes (fortunately now rarely seen) was the worst for clogging the massive equipment used there but it sounds as if shredded paper can cause problems too which is a little surprising.
