Assuming that we hit no overwhelming last minute hitches, the new version of the website will hit the airwaves on Wednesday, December 5th.

Over the next few days we will publish various articles to descibe the changes, improvements (we hope) and the temporary loss of one or two facilities.

One of the big difficulties in a major upgrade of the website is in the transfer of the vast amount of accumulated data from the old site to the new one.

We have taken the decision that the news stories, features, events, files and chatbox entries that are on the existing site will be automatically  transferred across to the new site.

The two main items which will not be transferred, mainly because of the user security issues associated with them, are the register of nicknames and passwords, and the items in the buy/sell part of the system.

When the new system goes live, users will need to register in order to use the chatbox and/or the buy/sell processes. This registering procedure (which will be described in more detail in a future article) is designed to make subsequent contributions easier after the initial registration.

The registration will still preserve the same anonimity as now by using a nickname where preferred, but the e-mail address provided will be automatically checked when registration is done – this is in line with most such systems nowadays.

So the upshot of all this is that after the switchover to the new system, people will have to do the registration process the first time they put up a chatbox entry or a buy/sell item, and existing buy/sell items will need to be re-entered from scratch.
