The Public Hall's new chairs, delivered only days before, made the success of last night's Valentine's Ball all the more comforting for lovers of romance and good food. There was also dancing to the Bill Basey Band where it was clear that the dance lessons so many have been enjoying at Pritchard's Dance & Fitness Academy in Burleydam are paying off. Waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, square tango, chacha, jive or Old Time, for every dance there were fine performers on the floor.

A hit of the night, and a successful fund raiser, was the rolling or sliding of pound coins along the highly polished floor, with the nearest coin to a bottle of Bourbon carrying off the prize. The curling at the Winter Olympics has obviously caught Audlem's imagination. Perhaps 'coining' could be the UK's suggestion as a new Olympic sport for 2012. The Public Hall's funds were certainly coining it in!
