What odds on an Audlem 2nd XI victory at 3.30pm on a glorious sunny opening day to the new season at Gorse Croft? Skipper John Wainwright had lost the toss and Trinity's batsmen were cruising on 93 for 2 on a flat batting track and fast outfield with the Audlem fielders pushed back into defensive positions.

Last season's top wicket taker in the league, the miserly Roy Wild was taken on by a belligerent A Shah and hit out of the attack. This led to the introduction of 'new boy' Neil Humphries. Things changed immediately as Shah was sent back to the pavilion bowled Humphries for a fine 51.

The game now swung dramatically as Audlem took a stranglehold on the game as opening bowler Graham Jones claimed two quick wickets, Humphries snaring another three and John Chadwick finishing off proceedings with 2 wickets for only 2 runs. Jones finished with figures of 3 for 35 in 15 very tidy overs and there was a match-winning performance from Humphries with 4 for 24. The Trinity innings closed on 114 all out in only 36.1 overs

A mention must be made about stand-in keeper Toby Banfield who claimed two stumpings and three catches and kept superbly throughout, conceding only 4 byes in the innings as he played a large part in the victory.

After expecting to be chasing 220 runs plus, Audlem were now left a far more modest total to achieve but it wasn't without its difficulties as wickets fell at regular intervals during the chase.

Audlem were indebted to opening batsman Zar Ahmed for a finely crafted 23 to guide his team home with 4 wickets and 23 overs to spare. Audlem gained 25 points and Trinity 7.

Next week Audlem 2nds travel to take on Frodsham 3rd X1
