Shown here is a typical example of the "burnt records" that are all that there is left of the records of many WW1 servicemen.

Two brothers

Just found another case – two brothers, John Blanton (or may be Blantern) born in Audlem about 1889, the other, William, at 'ANGLOW near Audlem' (Must be Hankelow!) in about 1892.

In 1911 John was in Nantwich Workhouse and William was in the Industrial school at Macclesfield (for orphans etc). Both went into the Army. John was killed 9th May 1915, while William was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal at Ypres in June 1915 but was killed 11th April 1917.

Their mother and father being dead or not known, the medals were sent to a sister who then lived in Liverpool/Manchester area. Short sad lives.
