Last week AudlemOnline published a plea from Celia Bloor of Audlem District History Society asking if anyone know about Searchlights in the local area during World War II.
Two correspondents came forward identifying a location in Buerton. One reply said: "I have just seen your request about searchlight stations and I can tell you that there was one at Buerton in a field right opposite the Windmill.
"That was the nearest one and as far as I can remember the only one in the vicinity of Audlem. There were some at Crewe but I don't know exactly where they were sited. The Buerton one was manned full time by a group of army lads who were billeted on the site."
The second response confirmed the Windmill location, saying: "We used to live in Windmill Lane, Buerton. During the war there was a searchlight battery in the field opposite Town House Farm."
Celia Bloor is very grateful for the information and wonders if anyone has more information about the troops manning the searchlights, such as their regiment, or anything that might add to the above.
