Readers yesterday will have seen the selection of photos sent in by Sally Ridley, nee Hicks, of the old Audlem vicarage. Today, we have three more photos, following an email exchange between Sally and Judy Evans of Williams' newsagents:
Judy, thank you for your childhood memories of the old vicarage. I like the idea of it acting as a play place for you all before it was demolished.
I have these three pictures, which might just be of interest.... one more of my Christening in 1940, one with my grandfather, Canon Hicks, on the drive and one of my father receiving the 'Yachtsman of the Year' Trophy much later in life (1972). Please click on the photos to enlarge.
He won it for sailing a boat belonging to Ron Amey, who built up his father's small business into a massive one, roadbuilding etc. (ARC). Ron missed the Bermuda Race, but Ted won it. This was after a massive coronary, which he wasn't expected to survive!
My father was also a noted mountaineer in the early days. The Royal Geographic Society people wanted him to join an Everest expedition in the 1930's, but, if he had gone, he would have had to forfeit his teaching job at the Dragon School in Oxford. He was shortly to marry my mother, so decided against going.
You have a picture of their wedding in 1936. (This was shown yesterday on AudlemOnline).
You spoke of the trees in the garden. I remember a good many damson trees between the house and coach house. There was a yew tree beside the coach house. I have a rather faded painting of it with flowers in front, which my grandmother painted.
Best wishes
Sally Ridley.
