Objectors to the planned marina a mile north of Audlem have expressed their disappointment at the decision of Crewe & Nantwich councillors to approve the scheme. As reported on Audlem Online last Friday evening, the plans put forward by the Maughan family were given the go-ahead, albeit with thirty three conditions.

This week's Chronicle reports that objectors had put forward fifty reasons for refusal saying that there were enough moorings on the local stretch of the canal and that the marina would spoil the canal itself.

The newspaper quotes Chloe Harris of Coole Lane who said: "There was mass disappointment within the group. I can't believe there was so little debate by the committee in the light of our objections, which were all factual and sincere. I expected more from democracy than this. I find it hard to see how the area will benefit from the marina, and particularly how tourism will be boosted in Audlem because it is quite a distance away."

Angus and Richard Maughan are pictured in the report. The 200-berth marina will go ahead and include a chandlery, cafe, office, toilet, shower and launderette facilities, boat workshop and car parking. Angus Maughan hopes building work will begin within 12 months. He said: "In time, I hope the local area and those who objected will reap the benefits of the scheme."
