Last night, the Nantwich Bookshop hosted a packed -out evening where Audlem resident and historian Roger Wickson spoke about his newly published book.

Roger says: "My book 'Kings and Bishops in Medieval England' deals with the relationship of the kings of England with their bishops from the Norman Conquest to Magna Carta.

"I have written it primarily for VIth formers studying Medieval History at 'A' level and undergraduates coming to Medieval History for the first time. But it is also written for the general reader who might have an interest in church history. It is not an arid academic tome!"

Philip Morgan of Keele University says of Roger's work: "Roger Wickson's very readable synthesis of early medieval England's two estates, the crown and the church, makes no assumptions about its readers' knowledge but leaves them with a clear and detailed understanding of how a different world of kings and their special advisers, the bishops, really worked."

Roger delighted attendees at the event, many from Audlem or Roger's history classes which he ran from 2000 until earlier this year, with an overview of the kings and bishops of the period and their often harmonious but occasionally turbulent relationships.

There was such a demand for copies of the book that the very large pile in stock disappeared completely and orders were being taken for those towards the end of the queue.

Audlem Mill also has copies of the book and Nantwich Bookshop, who laid on a splendid buffet last night, will doubtless be restocked very shortly.
