Llangollen Mid-ARS walk, January 24th 2026

This is a 6.75 mile walk from Llangollen along canal path, farm tracks, field paths and quiet country lanes. It will already be familiar to many of you. It is moderately difficult if the option to climb up to Castell Dinas Bran at the end is taken, but there is the alternative of a lane that leads back to Llangollen.

We park near the river and walk over the bridge and up to the canal path just above the town. After about a mile, we leave the canal and follow a farm track, passing above Valle Crucis Abbey, a Cistercian abbey dating from 1201 (sadly, with an ugly caravan park right next to it). We continue along field edges to reach an ascending track through woodland. The path continues, with views over to Llantysilio mountains.

We walk along quiet lanes towards the tiered limestone rocks of Eglwyseg, taking a lane that hugs the bottom of the cliffs. After a break for lunch, we continue on to the area known as the Panorama above Llangollen with Castell Dinas Bran now in view. Upon reaching the footpath leading up to the castle, there will be the option of taking the lane directly down to Llangollen. If it s snowy/icy, this will probably be the better option for the whole group. Both paths bring us back to Llangollen where there are plenty of caf s for refreshments.

Dogs will need to be on leads on farm tracks and country lanes.
