Hydro electricity feasibility to be tested this month

A few months ago, Audlem Online published a story that a grant had been received to fund an investigation in to the possibility of generating electricity using some of the sluice gates on the Audlem run of locks. The idea was discussed with British Waterways who were happy to look at the idea.

It has now been arranged that DerwentHydro, a company that specializes in small-scale hydro electricity schemes will be visiting Audlem on 19th June to make an initial assessment. Clearly, nobody knows if a scheme will be feasible, but the near continuous run of water down the sluice gates to the side of the locks makes it an idea worth looking at.

A number of other local areas, including Nantwich and Congleton, are also exploring the possibility of using rivers, the Weaver and the Dane. There have been a number of successful schemes around the country, often using old mill races.
