Bell-ringing Centenary

11th September 1926

On the 11th September 1926, a band of ringers rang a peal on Audlem bells – the first time this had been achieved. A peal on bells means that each bell strikes 5040 times, changing the order each time in precise, non- stop mathematical sequences. To date 29 peals have been rung in Audlem, the most recent in 2015.

11th September 2026

On 11th September this year, the Audlem bellringers are going to attempt another peal to celebrate the centenary of the first one. They are going to ring the same methods -Woodbine, Oxford and Kent.

In Audlem it takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes to ring a peal and needs a great deal of stamina and concentration. They will be starting at about 6 o'clock in the evening, so they will be finished before 9 o'clock.
