Some years ago when I was in charge of flying the flag on the tower I noticed that the weathercock was in a bad condition. Helen had the whole assembly sent away for refurbishment. The firm in charge in their report found a hole in the body of the cock.
The hole size was .303!!
When relating this this to an elder of the village he said:
"l am not surprised. The Home Guard often took pot shots at it when they had an unaccounted round. What awful shots -1 hit in 5 years."
