Holiday lodge plans for marina

Owners of the award-winning Overwater Marina have submitted plans for four timber-built holiday lodges at the site off Coole Lane.

The marina currently provides berths for 227 narrowboats in a rural setting on the canal about 1.5km from Audlem.

In a statement to Cheshire East, Cannock-based NextPhase Development says the marina is a Caravan Club certified location that has up to five pitches for touring caravans that is regularly oversubscribed.

They received permission to use land for a new 10-pitch caravan site earlier this year in a scheme that includes the erection of an amenity block with showers and toilets.

The latest application is for four holiday lodges positioned on the western edge of the marina towards Coole Lane. The lodges would be built next to open countryside where development is normally restricted to protect the landscape but the application says that the proposed lodges would be within the perimeter of the marina.

Although no specific designs have been submitted for the four lodges it is understood they would be of timber framed design and would be let out as holiday cottages.

The site falls within the boundary of Newell Parish Council which has agreed to support the application.

Permission to build the marina was granted in 2008 and since then several planning applications have been lodged to modify the original conditions, including the new 10-pitch touring caravan site.

A decision on the development by Cheshire East Council is expected by May 16th.
