History Society Thursday 18th Oct

The next Audlem and District History Society meeting will feature well known local speaker Graham Dodd talking about Ada Nield Chew, a not so well known local girl who stood up for workers' rights at the time of the suffrage movement.

Described NOW as a 'Crewe suffragette' and a 'heroine', Ada came to National attention in 1894 as the anonymous author of letters protesting at the difference in pay between men's rates and women doing the same work.

She signed herself 'A Crewe Factory Girl' but when she revealed her identity she and several sympathisers were promptly sacked. She has been used as an example in a project to promote gender equality in Crewe Schools. She served on the Nantwich Board of Guardians (of the 'Poor' – which would have included Audlem people) and was a member of the Crewe Independent Labour party which she helped form. She spent the rest of her life travelling, speaking and campaigning for women's suffrage and the right to join a trade union and receive a living wage.
