History Society and WW1 memorabilia

The History Society meets this evening, Thursday September 18th, at 7.30 pm in the Scout & Guide Hall when Celia Bloor and Maureen Morgan will give illustrated brief talks relating to finding out what your ancestors did in the war and what was happening in Audlem.

There will be a large display of items brought by Audlem Residents and shared with the Society. It is amazing how many items have been kept for one hundred years, including a kilt!

Among the items on show will be

• Memories from Audlem residents now deceased like Jack Nield and Nancy Lee.
• Extracts from school records and service records.
• Reports from the local papers, exemption certificates and appeals and tribunals,
• Letters and postcards,
• Three Audlem men (at least) had special awards, a DSO, a DCM and a Military cross.
• Items made from shell and bullet cases,
• One 'Dead man's penny',
• Ration books, austerity recipes and photos from Raven house, Adderley which was a hospital and Hawkesmoor Farm who helped the wounded relax.
• A collection of autograph books signed by the patients.
• Evidence that Audlem looked after some Belgian refugees
• A display concerning the Lawrence family of Meadows Farm which has been researched by them.
• Various certificates were issued afterwards including a 'mentioned in dispatches' signed by young Winston Churchill.

The research work is not completed but this is a start.

The display boards will be kept and it is hoped that they will be on show near to Remembrance Sunday, probably in St James' church but this has to be finalised.
