Nantwich road junction gets hi-tech upgrade to boost traffic flow

Cheshire East Council has completed the upgrade of a major road junction in Nantwich and has expressed its thanks to residents and businesses for their patience.
Work to the junction of Barony Road and Beam Street began in March to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety and support traffic flow through the busy junction.

Outdated electrical cables and poles were replaced and energy-efficient LED pedestrian and cycle signalling installed to complement the existing LED traffic lights.

The needs of vulnerable pedestrians have been considered through the installation of tactile paving and audible signals to help people with impaired sight and hearing to cross in safety.
Tactile devices installed within each push button box indicate when the 'green man' signal is showing.
Existing pedestrian and cyclist crossing lanes have been widened to further enhance safety at the junction.

A fascinating feature is the intelligent traffic signal technology known as 'Mova.' It stands for microprocessor optimised vehicle actuation.
This hi-tech management system is designed to reduce traffic delays by synchronising signal timings with changing traffic flows throughout the day.

Gary Mallin, contract manager for Cheshire East Highways, said: "I wish to express my thanks to motorists, local businesses and residents for their patience.
"This has been an important project at a difficult road junction and we hope that the residents of Nantwich will agree that the new scheme brings with it significant improvements to traffic flow and safety.
"The intelligent traffic lights system will help reduce queuing traffic at peak times to keep vehicles moving through the town.
"The new facilities at the junction will also help to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists using the crossings
"We are delighted to have delivered this much improved scheme within the agreed timeframe."
