Harris Hawk safely home

I found a very grumpy Harris Hawk hanging upside down from a barbed wire fence when I took the dogs out first thing this morning.

It was quite exciting disentangling it from the fence – we had to cut the jesses off in the end – but the hawk didn't seem too much the worse for wear.

It sat on a stump in our garden looking a bit sorry for itself but perked up considerably when I offered it some slivers of steak – straight on to my hand demanding to be fed.

She is now happily reunited with Mike, her owner – she'd been on the run for a week!

Good to have a happy ending.

Beautiful Harris Hawk in our garden all day yesterday – complete with jesses and bells.

The Harris Hawk is a medium-large bird of prey, common in the south western United States south to Chile and Argentina.

They are sometimes reported in Britain, but as it is a popular species in falconry, as this bird in Coxbank is clearly, any local sighting will be a bird that has escaped from captivity.
