Highways team work to keep roads and footpaths clear.

Highways staff have once again been out late into Thursday night and Friday gritting the borough's roads and plan to extend their operations to minor routes especially in outlying villages.

The team once again faced challenging weather conditions with icy stretches forming on some roads owing to sub-zero temperatures.

Further snowfall in the early hours Friday resulted in significant accumulations in some areas, chiefly in the north and east of the borough.

Gritters and snowploughs were deployed on primary routes and hillside communities with constant clearing and gritting operations continuing throughout the morning.

Additional resources have been made available so that secondary routes can be treated and cleared and town centre footways are also being treated.

The A54 and A537 roads to Buxton remain closed to through traffic but highways teams have worked hard to clear routes to local villages previously cut off.

The Met Office is predicting further wintry showers and sub-zero temperatures tonight with ice presenting a real threat.

Councillor David Topping, Cabinet member for service commissioning said: "Our staff are to be praised for their commitment and dedication. We have over 1,000km of highway to grit and teams are working very hard to meet the challenges of the last three days.
