Like a set from Downton Abbey, a smart, navy blue vintage motorcar roars along the long drive home towards Combermere Abbey......the scene is not fiction but a 'dream come true' for Combermere Estate's owner, Sarah Callander Beckett.
The car in question is a 1927 Crossley 20.9 Saloon, manufactured by Sarah's great-grandfather, Sir Kenneth Crossley.
Sir Kenneth acquired the Combermere Estate in the early C20th after having expanded his family's engineering business in Manchester, from making engines to manufacturing motorcars. The Crossley was a match for many high calibre marques, including Mercedes and Rolls-Royce.
In 1906 one of his cars won the record for the 'London-Monte Carlo Rally', completing the journey in just over 37 hours. The Crossley Company went on to support the First World War effort and became the country's second largest producer of aircraft.
Sarah Callander Beckett commented: "I'm thrilled to have a car made by my great-grandfather at long last. It's a delight to have a Crossley at the Abbey once more. We sourced this car in Ireland and it's in great condition inside and out."
With its classic design and gleaming paintwork, this rare and beautiful classic car will be offered for use as a wedding car for couples marrying at this prestigious, award-winning venue as a complement to their wedding arrangements. It is sure to bring many admiring glances from their guests.
Combermere Abbey is a privately-owned historic estate to the west of Audlem between Nantwich and Whitchurch. The Abbey itself is a family home, while exclusive weddings and events are hosted within the Walled Gardens; stylish and eco-friendly luxury accommodation is located in the converted stables and coach house.
