A bright sunny morning as we set off for our away game. The weather so mixed up and the other day so many crane flies were abroad – daddy long legs as we call them, erupting in numbers on my lawn and dancing their awkward life away in such a brief time. So, so ephemeral. And such very delicate creatures.
Enough of musing. We drive- Geoff and I, to Wrenbury for the match versus Wrenbury F C. Arrive at the leisure centre of the village – alongside their very smart health centre. A leisure centre with fine tennis courts, play area for children. A club house with bar. And a bowling green. all in the one centre. A man, busy working in cutting the grass etc – even ion a Sunday morning and so obviously not a council employee.
The pitch we are to play on. Well cut and marked out. The sky painted as a child would with fluffy white clouds. Light breeze. Players turn up gradually. We are playing a very new team this day. Young team with an average age of about 19 . A sharp contrast to ourselves with "old man" Kev Mort playing at the age of 42.
Wrenbury F C headed up by Rhys Wright – late of Audlem F C and son of our own registered secretary, Ro Wright.
Referee this day is Keith Curzon. One we always welcome as being both fair and firm in his officiating role.
1155 and play quite fast to start. Two of our players have been taking part in the Tough Mudder event at Cholmondeley yesterday- so a tad delicate from that challenge and the liquid refreshment thereafter. Add to this, the fact that quite a few of our Irish contingent were partying too, and we have some tired heads out there. As I settle on the touchline, a bevy of players' wives with their young children, join me. Chairs brought out of the changing room for their comfort. And they keep up a continuous chat the whole game through. I learn a few new words this day!
To the football. Surprise , surprise. Wrenbury score . A stupid so soft goal given away by our defensive backs. All against the play.
0-1
Temperature really hotting up- such swings in the weather this year. Then- just 2 minutes later, we score. And it is Kev Mort, "Granddad of the team" who puts it away.
1-1
Throw in by Kev Rodgers, met by Andrew Beko Betteley- he crosses to Connor Jones who heads just wide of the goal. We continue pressing hard and a fine piece of footwork by Kev R results in him scoring!
2-1 to us
Run up field by Beko from a cross by Kev Mort but his shot at goal goes wide. Kev M goes in with one of his trademark scything two footed tackles and receives a rebuke from Referee Curzon.
We start the second half in front. Sam Maddock after a knock and on runs Dale Bradbury . Game progresses as we press hard. Sun very welcome on my back and much use of the team's water bottles.
Ref. awards a penalty to us. Connor Jones takes it and slots it home.
3-1
Connor Baxter – goalie- down with an injury, but all OK after the magic water. Then he stops a certain goal.
1206. A harsh penalty against us. Rhys Wright takes it and scores.
3-2 !
1210. Beko scores
4-2
1212 Beko scores yet again
5-2
Fine cross by Pete Jones – met by Kyle Doughty- he races up the pitch. Taken down in a tackle. Free kick not successful – but then Connor J scores
6-2
Silly defending allows Wrenbury in again
6-3
Game over. A win for us . Good feeling and on a fine weathered day.
Next game is versus White Eagles – a brand new team of Polish players. We play at the Bentley ground at the Legends pitch. A team with a good reputation of winning already.
