Giving blood not so easy for some

Thursday's blood donor session in the Public Hall was very successful as Audlem's residents helped to top up the nation's blood banks.

Unfortunately three residents who turned up to give blood had to be turned away simply because there isn't a national database. All three have regularly travelled to the Nantwich donor sessions which are run by the North West Region. But the Audlem session was run by the West Midlands Region, which has a different database. Normally this would not be a problem as you just become a new donor. However, the three residents in question are all 60 or over. The National Blood Service does not allow people of 60 or over to be new donors.

The staff at the session were most apologetic and rued the lack of a national database. Surely it's time that one should be created as Audlem can't be the only place in the country with this problem.

In the days of trying to avoid unnecessary car journeys it seems unbelievable that Audlem residents will have to travel to Nantwich in order to donate such a vital commodity as blood, which by the National Blood Service's own admission is in short supply.
