Five Go Mad on Snowdon

On Saturday a small, but perfectly formed, group of five Audlem Ramblers (ARS) decided it would be a good idea to walk to the top of Wales's tallest mountain, and back down again.

The walk started with the leader outlining the 8-mile route including 2,400ft of ascent and giving a motivational talk about the team's ability to complete the climb without any difficulties, before making a note of the position of all the defibrillators along the way.

After a couple of hours of climbing it became clear that the track was getting steeper and more difficult, notwithstanding that the walk leader kept saying that the back of the climb had been broken and that it was more or less flat from there on. The pace was slowing, knees were moaning and the frequency of drinks breaks increasing. At this point the walkers were taunted by some children who came running and skipping along the track saying things like, "I'm only eight!"

When the walk began the weather was dank and grey. The walk leader kept saying that it was brightening up, so by the time the summit was reached visibility was down to a few feet, the temperature had plummeted and it was starting to rain.

After a quick, sodden, lunch stop the long descent began and being deprived of any sort of view the Audlem Ramblers spent the next couple of hours doing what they do best, putting the world to rights.

So, if you are able to walk and talk at the same time, can identify any of the celebrities on Strictly, have a solution to the energy crisis, know the difference between a tea cake and a fruit cake, or even if you think you can keep up with an eight-year-old, then Audlem Ramblers could be just what you're looking for.
