While its staff are used to facing risk on a daily basis, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has just received a prestigious national award for its risk management across the whole organisation.

The Service won the Enterprise Risk Management Strategy of the Year Award against strong competition from companies in all industries and sectors across the UK.

Its Corporate Risk Management framework sets out how it addresses a whole range of financial, reputational, health and safety and project issues which could prevent the organisation from delivering its services and meeting its objectives.

Cheshire was the only fire and rescue service shortlisted for the awards which are organised by CIR Magazine (Continuity, Insurance and Risk). Judges praised the entry and said that enlightened companies were now embedding risk management across their whole organisations.

Corporate Programme Manager Sophie Thorley, who leads the team responsible for managing and developing the framework, said: "We're delighted and proud to have been recognised with this award as it demonstrates the hard work of the team to make Cheshire and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service a safer place to live and work.

"Risk management is embedded across the entire Service but we recognise this is a journey of continuous improvement and we are training and developing local 'risk champions' to ensure we maintain the momentum."
