According to a BBC online report, it would take more than a decade, at the current rate, to fill in all existing potholes in England and Wales.

Many have noticed the ever increasing size of the holes which appeared in Audlem's roads after the cold weather. Villagers will be no doubt dismayed to hear that pothole compensation claims, which run into hundreds of thousands of pounds a year, are being paid out of the same pot of money as road repairs which creates another 'large hole'.

The potholes can be very dangerous for cyclists, prompting Richard George of the Cyclists Touring Club's CTC to set up a pothole reporting site: www.fillthathole.org.uk. Since its launch in 2007, the website has logged almost 30,000 hazards showing just how important people think the problem is.
Utility companies often come in for particular criticism for leaving the roads in a very poor state after they have finished their work. By law they should reinstate the roads to the required standards.
