Extra ARS walk

As well as the usual monthly programme of walks, ARS (the Audlem Ramblers Society) have organised a special walk today to celebrate the linking of St James the Great of Audlem with Santiago (St James) de Compostella.

This will follow the old pilgrim route, starting along the canal to Adderley

and Market Drayton and from there to Santiago. ARS organiser Andy estimates the total distance as just over ten miles, but there is an optional extra detour via Madrid which, he reckons, brings it up nearer to fifteen. He also says that although he has the 1:25000 map as far as Market Drayton, it would help if anybody has the map for the last bit from there to Santiago.

This is a linear walk, but there is a regular bus service to and from the square in

front of the Cathedral at Santiago for those who want an easier shorter option.

Although the route probably passes a pub along the way, walkers are advised

to bring sandwiches and to carry lots of water.

To make the whole thing more realistic, participants are asked to carry a

scallop shell (the ancient pilgrim insignia) and if possible to bring a

suitable relic. A part of a saint's skull is a good one, although they are getting hard to find these days, but try the Charity Shop in Shropshire Street.

Please meet on the Audlem car park at 8.00am this morning, April 1st, for an early start.
