Does your drive have space to share?

The Audlem Tourist and Traders Groups have known for a long time that one of the big deterrents to visitors, tourists and even locals using the Village shops and facilities is the perennial difficulty of parking.

Various schemes are being considered to provide new areas of parking within the village, but there is one scheme that has been thought up that could be put into practice more or less instantly and would not cost anybody anything except a bit of cooperation.

Share your Drive

It is suggested that parking spaces could be identified within the more central part of the village where there are individual spaces which are not used at the critical weekday times – perhaps part of a driveway.

The idea is that these would be matched individually with specific traders who would then use that space during the working day instead of taking up a space on the main Car Park. It has been calculated that Traders use some 20 to 25 of the available spaces (and they have literally nowhere else to park) so this scheme could release a significant number of spaces in the main Car Park.

This scheme sounds as if it is of obvious benefit only to the Traders, but everybody needs to bear in mind that the easier it is to use the village facilities, then the more people will do so and this will make the shops and services themselves more viable in the long run.

So please tell Joe Hoyles, who has undertaken to try to get this scheme going, if you might be able to provide such a space. There needs to be much discussion about the terms and conditions of such usage to protect the owner of the space, but with a bit of commonsense all round it could make a significant contribution to reducing the problem.
