Didgeridoo triumph for Stella

There was strong competition at the Audlem Mill to win a didgeridoo yesterday at 4.00pm. Contestants had a choice of three instruments to first play, and if triumphant, to take home as first prize.

After a fiercely contested battle, two accomplished musicians were put through an agonising blow off before young Stella was declared the winner.

The didgeridoo (also known as a didjeridu or didge) is said by some to be the world's oldest intsrument. It was developed by the Indigenous Australians of northern Australia at least 1,500 years ago and is, of course, still in widespread use today.

Audlem Mill has been stocking an amazing selection of ethnic musical instruments for the Audlem Festival – see the second photo which can be enlarged by clicking on it.

There's everything from djembe drums to ocarinas, castanets to wooden flutes, and rainsticks to didgeridoos (plus instruction books!).

They've got coconut thumb pianos, and even more gourd-eous ones (made from gourds!). There's still some left and it's worth popping in to try them, including a couple of didgeridoos. Only then will appreciate well just how well Stella did yesterday!
