CPRE and Local Plan

Cheshire East Council recently held a workshop to discuss aspects of their Local Plan. The meeting was in Macclesfield on 23rd January.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) have been in touch with AudlemOnline with an update on their submission to the meeting. They say:

This event was by invitation only – and we responded saying:- In his report, the Cheshire East Local Plan EIP inspector highlighted a 'serious mismatch between the economic strategy and the housing strategy of the submitted plan'.

CPRE are of the opinion that Cheshire East Council brought this criticism upon themselves by promoting overly ambitious economic aspirations.

We have responded to the recent consultation saying:- We would urge the principal authority not to over-estimate the potential economic impacts of HS2 Phase Two if indeed it does come to pass.

The promised economic benefits of high speed rail have failed to materialise in other countries outside of the capital cities and, in the case of the UK, there is still a degree of doubt about some aspects of Phase One, notably the re-building of Euston station, let alone aspects of Phase Two such as the final version of the route.

Also, Stoke on Trent is making a strong pitch for having an HS2 station.

The environmental statement for HS2 Phase Two has yet to be published and parliament has yet to vote on HS2 Phase Two.

It would be inappropriate for CEC to assume too many economic benefits from this one source, especially as it may not come to fruition.
