Last week saw the official opening of Corbrook Court's 24-bed extension by broadcaster, journalist and ex-nurse Clare Rayner. Clare unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion with Tim Morris of Morris Care, who operate the care home, and Andrea Heath, who manages the facility.

Clare Rayner told the assembled residents, staff and guests that it was an interesting time for care homes. She said: "We have to find a civilized way to finance care: down with the pernicious means-test. Older people have done their bit so it's time the younger people looked after the old." She went on to recall a German phrase: "One mother can raise six children, but all too often the six children can't look after the one mother."

Andrea Heath introduced the many staff who have won awards over recent months and were presented with certificates by Clare Rayner. The awards included Basic Hygiene; First Aid; NVQ Levels 2 and 3; the Safe Handling of Medicines Certificate, Customer Care and Immunisation awards; 'Challenges of End of Life Care'; several awards in Palliative Care and Inspection Control; Maximising Income for Older People and a Certificate in Personnel Practice. Some members of staff had achieved as many as four certificates.

A special award was then made to the new housekeeper, Wendy Mann, for the exemplary way she had taken on her responsibilities.

Corbrook Court has until now had 24 residents but the new extension will increase the numbers who live there to 45. Many of the guests commented on the very friendly atmosphere and the clear commitment to quality care. There were many compliments about the food and the menus on display showed a choice of dishes and standard of catering that was outstanding.

In addition to the new bedroom extension on the main building, work is just about complete on the new Corbrook Country Estate, another major investment in the Audlem area. Situated behind Corbrook Court, it offers apartments and bungalows for sale to those over 65 and/or in need of personal care. More on the country estate later this week.
