Audlem has pride of place in the May edition of Cheshire Life – we have now had features in four recent issues! The May article includes six photographs and describes the history of the village and the theories about the origin of the name Audlem.

The village was listed in the Domesday book of 1086 as Aldelime. At that time, a small area of the extensive woodland that covered the area had been cleared to create two acres of meadow. Many experts, says the article, think 'Lyme' is derived from an ancient British word meaning 'place where the elms grow'. The 'ald' part of the original name was the Anglo-Saxon word for 'old' or 'former' and that perhaps the name Aldelime signified it was no longer part of the forest or 'Lyme'. Another theory is the settlement was founded by an Anglo-Saxon named Ealda or Alda and was therefore 'Alda's part of the Lyme'.

It's a fascinating article throughout. Williams' have ordered in extra copies of Cheshire Life and it is now on sale at the newsagents for £3.20.
