Dave Hickson Doubles – Drama on the Green: Condrey and Sturdy Edge Out Rivals in Club Thriller

The momentum at Audlem Bowling Club is officially in overdrive! Following a spectacular season opener on March 8th, 32 players returned to the green on March 22, 2026, for the second club competition of the year, the Dave Hickson Doubles.

The day was a testament to the club s incredible growth, having attracted 9 brand new members to the sport already this season. Under the expert eye of Lesley, whose flawless organisation continues to be the backbone of our internal competition success, the atmosphere was electric from the first bowl to the final wood.

The day began with a series of hard-fought matches across multiple groups. The early round-robin stages saw the field whittled down as four standout pairs rose to the top of their respective leagues. These pairs demonstrated the consistency and grit required to navigate the group stages, setting the stage for a dramatic transition into the knockout semi-finals.
The semi-final stage set a high bar for the day, featuring two clashes that tested the mettle of the club s top pairings:

  • The Powerhouse Face-Off: In a heavyweight bout, Andy Watson and Fred Walley went head-to-head with Graham Tysal and Andy Hannha. In a game defined by tactical shifts and brilliant recovery bowls, Tysal and Hannha managed to find their rhythm at the critical moment, punching their ticket to the final.
  • The Precision Duel: In the adjacent game, Pam Vaughan and Dave Hardman faced the clinical duo of Sue Condrey and Andy Sturdy. It was a display of masterclass bowling from both sides, but Condrey and Sturdy s consistency proved insurmountable the cream rising to the top and securing them a spot in the final.

The final showdown between Sue Condrey & Andy Sturdy and Graham Tysal & Andy Hannha was a masterclass in Crown Green grit.
The match was a true "cat and mouse" affair, with neither side able to break away early on. Tysal and Hannha applied relentless pressure, but Sue Condrey s pinpoint placement combined with Andy Sturdy s steely resolve kept the scorecard ticking in their favor.

As the ends drew to a close, Condrey and Sturdy found an extra gear. In a flurry of brilliant woods and repetitive touchers that drew roars of approval from the clubhouse gallery, they pulled ahead to secure a 14 11 victory, officially claiming the club's second internal trophy of the 2026 season.

With 32 participants, 9 new faces joining the ranks, and a standard of play that belies the early date in the calendar, Audlem Bowling Club is buzzing. A huge thank you to Lesley for officiating another superb club event and keeping the matches flowing seamlessly. If today was any indication, the race for the Club trophies is going to be the most competitive in years!
