Pledge to brake during National Road Safety week!

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is gearing up for National Road Safety week which runs from the 21st to the 27th of November.

Road Safety Week is coordinated annually by road safety charity Brake and involves thousands of people around the UK taking action for safer roads.
Colin Heyes, the Service's Road Safety Manager, said: "This year, we are encouraging drivers to take the Brake Pledge. The pledge calls for drivers to promise to do everything they can to protect themselves and the people around them. The elements of the pledge are the known major contributory factors to the deaths and injuries which occur on the roads of the UK.

These are inappropriate speed, use of mobile phones, not using seatbelts, driving when tired, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and using poorly maintained vehicles. We'll also be asking people to only use the car if necessary -- public transport, walking and cycling are better for the environment and health."

"Every day, 5 people die on UK roads and over 60 are seriously injured. Brake are asking everyone to help put a stop to this by spreading the word about life-saving importance of The Brake Pledge during Road Safety Week.
We're pledging our support by hosting a number of driving safety initiatives across the flagship week."
Brake time in Widnes

To kick off the week, Widnes Green Watch will head to Rivendell Garden Centre on 21st November from 10.00 am to 3.00pm. The team will be advising green fingered customers of the various ways in which they can improve their own road safety, and that of others.
Red Watch will be joined by the Service's Road Safety Team as they deliver road safety advice at Halton College. In addition, White Watch will be delivering vital road safety messages to shoppers in Green Oaks Shopping arcade.

Brake time in Warrington
On 26th November Warrington's Red Watch will be offering vital road safety information to people in the centre of Warrington, and White Watch will be hosting a road safety engagement day at a Tesco's in Warrington.
Anyone who is visiting Warrington Retail Park during road safety week will have the chance to chat to Green Watch about staying safe on the roads this winter. Blue Watch will be welcoming Warrington Collegiate pupils to the fire station for a presentation on road safety.

Brake time in Stockton Heath
Students at Priestley College will get a visit from Bravo Watch, who will be offering vital road safety advice and Alpha Watch will be hosting a cycle safety event at the Hut Group

Brake time in Ellesmere Port
Red Watch will be heading to the Royal British Legion and Ladbrokes getting drivers to take the Brake pledge!
On 23rd November, Green Watch will host a dedicated road safety day at the fire station while Blue Watch will be visiting local elderly residents during the flagship week to offer winter survive sessions dedicated to road safety.

Brake time in Chester
Red Watch and Blue Watch will be visiting the University of Chester, with Blue Watch speaking to freshers students about the dangers of using a mobile phone whilst driving.

Brake time in Crewe and Nantwich
Nantwich firefighters are hosting a dedicated 'Brake road safety event' in Morrison's in Nantwich. The event will take place on 24th November from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

Brake time in Knutsford
Knutsford's Alpha Watch will be visiting local newsagents to drop off cycle safety leaflets for paper boys and girls.

Brake time in Wilmslow
Delta Watch will be going to a local petrol station in Wilmslow to carry out the Brake initiative during road safety week on Saturday 26th November

Brake time in Northwich
Northwich firefighters will be engaging with key stage two children, offering valuable lessons about cycling safety.
Runcorn, Birchwood, Macclesfield and Congleton Fire Stations will also be offering road safety advice at various events across the week.
