Cheshire Highways is considering a raft of traffic-calming measures for Audlem, including road resurfacing, erasing white lines, creating 'pinch points' and imposing new parking restrictions.

Councillor Mike Hill, who holds the Highways and Transport brief for Audlem, told a meeting of the Parish Council that highways experts are considering a number of options to improve both safety and traffic flows in the village.

"We have had a meeting with Highways in Crewe and they are looking to go ahead with a number of traffic schemes for Audlem," he said.

Among measures currently being considered are:

  • Bridge narrowing – single lane 'pinch points' at the Canal Bridge and New Bridge at Salford with priority for motorists leaving the village and a new pedestrian footpath.
  • Road repainting – removing white lines from the centre of stretches of road to encourage drivers to reduce speeds and take greater care.
  • Parking restrictions – assessing current roadside parking spaces and reviewing parking places on Cheshire Street.
  • Road resurfacing – a major overhaul of the Cheshire Street road surface at the entrance to the village car park and work on roads at Swanbach and Chapel End.
  • Flooding relief – talks with United Utilities on repeated drainage problems at the entrance to Audlem Fire Station.
  • New signage – a review of the signaling system for traffic around St James' in Stafford Street and the erection of de-priming signs along the A525.
  • Speed limits – Imposition of 40mph speed limits on the A529 at Green Lane to Swanbach.

Cllr Hill told the meeting: "All these things are being considered and there is a possibility they could all be rolled into a single scheme."

Councillors were reminded that not all, or indeed any, of the schemes would be completed in the near future just as previous schemes had failed to materialize.

"But they are back on the worksheet for consideration and they are being considered for costing," added Cllr Hill.
