When bells rang out on the 11th November 1918 they announced the end of the most catastrophic war the world had yet seen.

At the time, bells were at the heart of the community, marking events of great significance and communicating to people long before modern technology connected us. Many bellringers joined the war effort and in total 1400 lost their lives.

Audlem bellringers will be ringing twice on Sunday, starting with the bells half- muffled for the service from 9.45 to 10.15. This has a sombre tone to recognise the loss of so many lives.

At 7.05pm we will be ringing a quarter peal with the bells 'open' in celebration of peace. This time has been chosen as apparently it coincides with beacons being lit across the country.
