The eighteenth annual Bagpipe and Hurdy-gurdy day, originally at the Shroppie Fly, took place for the second successive year at the Joules Brewery, Red Lion, Market Drayton on Saturday November 14th.
In spite of particularly inclement weather over thirty musicians attended including about sixteen Bagpipe and Hurdy-gurdies in roughly equal numbers. Amongst these was Charles Hoy from Woore, who, with a few colleagues, played several tunes on four Northumbrian pipes.
Other visitors included a couple from Fishguard, Hurdy-gurdy maker Neal Brook, Preston, regular visitor Diane Richardson, accordion player from Halifax and a second appearance of Peter Kanssen who came by train from London to Stafford, then cycled with Hurdy-gurdy to Market Drayton.
This is the kind of enthusiast we like to attract since a few years ago Rory Scammel came from Leeds to Audlem, then played his Hurdy-gurdy on top of Snowdon the next day.
A fine afternoon was enjoyed with local Hurdy-gurdies from Swanbach, Hankelow, Moreton Say and Malpas.
