The Women's Institute is enjoying a huge resurgence and no wonder!
Its progressive ethos is perfectly compatible with modern ideals, and the Audlem W.I. is no exception – and what's more we certainly know how to party!
What an afternoon we had! Despite the cold and icy roads, our members turned out warmly dressed in their droves to take part in an afternoon of Christmas fun and frolics!
Following correct W.I. protocol, members were encouraged to be in full control of their faculties by embarking on the tedious job of sipping the odd paper cup or two of mulled wine!
Who needs to worry about arthritic limbs when you can play pass the parcels by just staying put on your chair and passing the gifts around instead, from right to left, as instructed. Who cares if one member ended up with two parcels instead of one?
We in the W.I. are nothing if not adaptable!
Concentration was heightened, as the next game introduced was 'pass the paper star.' This entailed teams of eight valiantly sucking air through a straw, picking up the paper star and passing it to the next team member without dropping it!
Fortunately we had the foresight to ensure that First Responders would be at hand in case of any undue excessive exertions and I am glad to report that all members survived this stressful activity with nothing more than the odd red face or two!
What with glasses of mulled wine, bags of (chocolate) money and all that laughter, passers by must have wondered what on earth was going on in The Scout Hut!
After all of these exertions, including a word quiz and poem reading- we do like to stretch our members both physically and mentally – no W.I. party would be complete without a succulent selection of freshly made sandwiches, home baked cakes and plenty of tea and as if by magic they appeared from somewhere behind the scenes!
Well fed, and with vocal cords lubricated, we ended the party with a lusty version of 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,' and 'O Come All Ye Faithful' amongst other carols and all of the members gave thanks to the W.I. Committee who had done a sterling job creating a Christmas Party to be remembered.
