On Sunday September 14th there was a ceremony on the front at New Brighton on the Wirral to mark the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the school run by Dr Poggi, later headmaster of Audlem Grammar School and buried in Audlem.
Ian and Celia Bloor represented researchers from Audlem History Society and John Hardy represented pupils of the school (his grandfather also attended) and the enquiring mind which wondered what this Italian was doing in Audlem Cemetery.
The VIP's present included the former local MEP who also has a Poggi in his family tree, the Italian Consul and her husband, the local deputy Mayor and Mayoress, a great grandson and two great great granddaughters of Dr Poggi.
The New Brighton school burned down and an elaborate Victorian shelter took its place and is a popular place to sit. It is noteworthy that Garibaldi sent his sons to be schooled there.
Several of the family visited Audlem a couple of years ago to visit the Grammar School and
hear a talk on Dr Poggi at the History Society meeting.
