On Saturday 13th January the volunteer Lock Keepers / Lock Rangers based in Audlem met as normal in their covered accommodation adjacent to the entrance to the Audlem Mill Shop. We were greeted by our Volunteer Team Leader (Angela) who in turn is a full time employee with the Canal & River Trust.
This month we had a total of 9 volunteers in attendance plus Ange, great to see so many faces ready to assist.
After the safety brief for the days task had been delivered by 'Ange' she informed us that we were being updated with the latest C & R T, Slip, Trips and Falls campaign being rolled out to the work force.
There was a question and answer session and all the team found benefits from being updated and reminded of the need of acting and operating in a safe and professional manner whilst on duty in and around the lock system.
Now back to today's task, a 'in house task today' the team spent the day clearing, emptying, organising their compound and covered accommodation areas.
After the canal stoppage was completed there was a lot of in house tidying to cover where our area of responsibility had been used for safe storage of tools, equipment and mechanical machinery. Another worth while job 'well done'.
The team (with permission from Derek Kellett the supervisor in charge of the lock gate replacement programme) were able to make use of a part full waste
skip that had been sited for the initial clean up from the lock gate replacement. Thank you Derek, the skip speeded up our programme of work for the day.
Next month, we are due to meet as normal on the second Saturday, 10th February at 10:00 outside of the Audlem Mill Shop and as normal new volunteers are more than welcome to join us for the day.
Again, teas, hot drinks and the odd biscuit are available to all the team.
