Audlem Church Clock

The Clock on Audlem Church Tower was installed in 1911 to commemorate the Coronation of King George V and Queen Mary and it was paid for by public subscriptions.

In September 2012 its winding mechanism was automated. This is in the year of their Granddaughter’s Diamond Jubilee. It has been paid for by very generous donations.

The work was carried out by Smith of Derby who now own Joyce’s of Whitchurch – the makers of the Clock.  They have all the records for the Clock and are market leaders in this work.

When the campaign to raise the money started in 2008 invitations were issued to come and help with the winding or just to visit the Clock and a few people came. An invitation was issued to come to the Last Wind Up and nobody came!

It is inevitable that when 21st Century technology is bedding down with late 19th Century/ early 20th Century craftsmanship, there will be a few hiccups.

It would be appreciated if any such hiccups are noticed, a call is made to 01270 811887 so they can be dealt with as soon as possible.

It must be a miserable existence being a Church Clock, especially this one. There you are, the most prominent feature in the Village and there are only two occasions on which you are ever mentioned

1. If you are, through no fault of your own, either fast or slow and:

 2 On New Years’ Eve when everyone complains that you didn’t strike Midnight when everyone was making too much noise to hear you!
