Audlem bridge plan to curb speeding drivers

Single lane traffic over an Audlem bridge would curb speeding drivers, claims a parish councillor.

Councillor Mike Hill told an Audlem Parish Council meeting of his concern at the speed of some drivers as they head out of Audlem along the Whitchurch Road.

"People are accelerating very fast out of the village, particularly young people," he said.

Now councillors looks set to press Cheshire East to fast track a scheme to narrow the Audlem bridge and make it a single lane carriageway.

Councillor Hill told the meeting: "We could try to do something with the bridge. We should try to get this scheme brought forward."

He claimed that 'pinching' the current highway into a single lane would not only curb fast drivers but would also allow for proper pedestrian pavements to be constructed across the bridge on both sides of the road.

The current road allows only for a narrow path and road markings on the north side of the Audlem canal bridge 78 with no room for a proper pavement.

If the bridge was made single lane only, drivers would be forced to stop and give way to priority traffic.

There are also plans in the pipeline for a roundabout to be built at the T-junction at the top of Green Lane.

Poor visibility makes it dangerous for drivers pull out at the junction and a mini-roundabout could also help to cut traffic speeds into the village.

Councillors agreed to tackle Cheshire East on bringing both schemes forward to get them implemented as quickly as possible.
