Audlem made their way to the edge of the Staffordshire Moorlands on Sunday to lock horns with Caverswall CC at the delightful Alan Gott Memorial Ground.
Skipper Ronnie Farnell lost the toss and was invited to bat by host captain Lee Wainwright. Caverswall's bowling attack consisted of seasoned regular Anwar Hussain and 13 year old Harvey Anson making his debut in the seniors. Audlem's top order batsmen knew Anwar as a very tidy' line & length' bowler who makes scoring difficult so the intention was to score as freely as possible off a 'nervous young debutant' at the other end. At 22 for 4 that plan had to be re-evaluated as Harvey had taken out the cream of Audlem's batting with all four wickets to his credit but his tender years came to Audlem's aid as he had to be removed from attack after 5 magnificent overs due to ECB regulations preventing juniors being 'over bowled'.
With Harvey out of the attack Audlem managed to regroup led by surviving opening batsman Andy Rothwell who had managed to escape the earlier carnage and now taking centre stage forming valuable partnerships with Usman Ghani (15), Zar Ahmed (5) and Charlie Hine (38) to complete a match winning knock of 93 before being caught in the' deep' with the score on 167. Skipper Ronnie Farnell (20) came in and played a delightful cameo innings before being bowled off the last delivery of the allotted 40 overs attempting his now trademark reverse sweep with the total on 195 for 9.
The visitors were relieved to recover after the nightmare start and probably were the happier of the two teams at the tea interval. Audlem were quick out of the blocks and made immediate inroads into the host's batting line-up which enabled Ronnie to allow his occasional bowlers to turn their arm over. It was no surprise that batting hero Andy Rothwell cemented his man of the match performance with two wickets as Caverswall slumped to 55 all out in 26.4 overs.
Young Harvey was the not out batsman for the hosts and received warm congratulations for his day's performance from all of the Audlem lads at the conclusion of the game.
