Yesterday morning we presented 180 Helianthus Annuus plants (giant sunflowers) to all the children at St James school from nursery children up to year 6.
This is the continuation of our policy of involving the children in community life as each year for the past fifteen, I have given out marrows, gourds, onions, sweet corn, courgettes etc.
The children look forward to this as they all seek to grow a fine plant over the period through summer until harvesting in September/ October.
This year Annie Goodwin has suggested a great idea that we have adopted. This is that each child will write up a diary of growing the sunflower and will be photographing themselves along the plant as it grows – and grows.
We will then be at school in September/ October to see the fruits of their labours and to present prizes. Oh, by the way, this includes the teaching staff too.
